Information for Beginners
Winter is when we offer all of our beginner classes. We will take you from ‘2 left feet’ to confidently dancing at socials. All our classes last for a month or more and classes are progressive- each week builds on the last.
Starting in January, we offer two classes for beginners: Fundamentals of Latin Social Dance and Body Movement. Both of these classes are accessible-friendly, senior-friendly, and designed for people with two left feet. If you’ve never danced before, Fundamentals is where you should start. We make this class extra fun and very friendly. We don’t get too technical or detailed- that comes later on- but you’ll have enough basics and you’ll be dancing right away! Fundamentals is a partnerwork class, but you don’t need to bring a partner- we have plenty of extras and will be switching throughout the class. Our Body Movement class focuses on grounded hip movement and upper body movement. This self-paced class is for folks that currently dance at socials, eventually want to take the salsa or bachata course, or are simply looking to add some additional movement in their life.
JANUARY
Fundamentals of Latin Social Dance Mondays 6-7pm
Body Movement Mondays 7-8pm
In February, we begin our Beginner Salsa course. We teach this class cohort-style which means students begin and progress through the course together as a group. Our Beginner Salsa course lasts for 3 months and classes are 2 hours each. We dive deep into history, culture, footwork, and technical partnerwork skills in the first hour and in the second we do Rueda de Casino (salsa done in a circle) and practice. We offer 3 instructors and 3 additional helpers from our Performance Team, so you’ll get alot of 1-on-1 attention. Salsa is a difficult dance and typically, folks take this course twice before moving onto Intermediate. That means you’ll have opportunities to dance with many people who have done it before.
FEBRUARY- APRIL
Beginner Salsa Mondays 6-8pm
By the end of April, you’ll be dancing merengue, bachata, and some basic salsa. At this point, you can join us in our Intermediate Salsa classes which are on Tuesdays from 6-7pm or take the Beginner Salsa series again in the fall.
